Corporate Bitcoin Buyers Return as Market Stabilizes

Corporate Bitcoin purchasing resumed this week with two major acquisitions. Strive bought approximately 1,800 BTC for $143 million between August 24 and 28, while MicroStrategy, after a roughly ten-week hiatus, purchased 4,603 BTC worth $369.7 million. These purchases added to market demand during a period of strength for Bitcoin, which closed August up more than 24%.

MicroStrategy's return to accumulation came after the company sold 6,916 BTC for approximately $430 million between June 30 and August 10 to improve its liquidity position. The latest purchase brought its total holdings to 845,050 BTC.

Strive's acquisition moved the company to fifth place among publicly-traded Bitcoin holders. The company purchased 1,800 BTC at an average price of $79,431 per coin, including fees, lifting its holdings from 21,356 BTC to 23,156 BTC. Wall Street responded positively, with TD Cowen raising its price target for Strive's stock from $28 to $32 while maintaining a buy recommendation.

According to Bitcoin Treasuries data, publicly-traded firms collectively hold approximately 1.264 million Bitcoin across 198 companies. However, this concentration is significant: the top five companies hold about 78.4% of corporate Bitcoin, with MicroStrategy independently controlling more than 66%.

The treasury model creates competing dynamics. When Bitcoin appreciates and capital markets remain receptive, companies can issue securities to fund additional purchases, reinforcing buying pressure. However, the mechanism reverses during downturns. MicroStrategy reported a GAAP net loss of $257.6 million in the second quarter, with $234 million tied to fair-value declines in Bitcoin and strategy-related holdings.

The latest activity reflects a selective market dynamic. While the strongest operators are accelerating accumulation, weaker or financially constrained companies have retreated or restructured their crypto strategies. Whether corporate Bitcoin purchasing becomes a durable source of global demand depends on whether these companies can raise capital faster than Bitcoin volatility erodes the premiums supporting the model.
