Crypto.com announced on Nov. 2, 2026 that its consumer app will stop providing retail services in Hong Kong on Feb. 1, 2027. The notice gives users roughly three months to close accounts and withdraw funds.
Reason for the shutdown
The company cited evolving regulatory requirements in Hong Kong and a strategic decision to allocate resources to markets with greater long‑term potential. The move is described as part of an effort to optimise global operations.
Ongoing presence in Hong Kong
Crypto.com’s local subsidiary, Foris DAX HK Limited, remains in Hong Kong and continues to pursue a Virtual Asset Trading Platform (VATP) licence from the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC). The licence application was submitted in Feb. 2024 and is still pending as of Nov. 2026.
During the review period, the subsidiary operates under a “deemed‑to‑be‑licensed” status, allowing it to continue activities while the regulator decides. If the SFC rejects the application, the status could trigger a three‑month wind‑down period.
Focus shift
With the retail app withdrawn, Crypto.com plans to concentrate on institutional services for professional and corporate clients in Hong Kong.
Implications for users
Retail customers must close their accounts and transfer funds before the Feb. 1, 2027 deadline, following guidance that Crypto.com will provide in the coming months.
The outcome of the VATP licence application will determine whether Crypto.com maintains a regulated foothold in Hong Kong or completes a full exit.
