Cryptocurrency liquidations surged to their highest level since the market crash on October 10, 2025, as Bitcoin and Ethereum led the broader crypto market in adding more than $220 billion over a 24-hour period. According to data from CoinGlass analyzed on August 20, the crypto industry registered approximately $3.35 billion in total liquidations.
During crypto's October 10 Black Friday event, $2.46 billion in shorts and $16.78 billion in longs were wiped out. In the recent 24-hour window, the Ethereum ecosystem recorded the largest single-network forced closure of derivatives positions at $610 million, representing a 7.27% increase based on metrics from Coinalyze.
The meme coin sector, which held a market capitalization of approximately $23.8 billion, experienced a daily spike in crypto liquidations of roughly 12.25% to 15.1 million.
The sharp liquidation of traders catalyzed a short squeeze, a price rally that occurs when rising prices force short sellers to buy assets to cover their positions, adding extra buying pressure. Bitcoin and Ethereum led broader crypto assets with higher Open Interest amid persistent positive funding rates. Bitcoin saw an 8.85% uptick in Open Interest to $23.8 billion with an average funding rate of +0.0077%, while Ethereum recorded an 11.93% increase in Open Interest to $13.2 billion with a funding rate of +0.0099%.
