The cryptocurrency market cap rose 39.6% during the third quarter, gaining $840 billion to close at $3 trillion, according to data from CoinGecko. This marks the largest quarterly increase since the fourth quarter of 2024 and ends three consecutive quarters of losses.
Despite the quarterly gain, the market remains 4% lower year to date, having peaked near $3 trillion on September 21 before closing at $2.96 trillion.
August Led the Recovery
August was the primary driver of Q3's gains, with a 21.8% surge worth $490 billion. The month's rally followed a US Treasury announcement to at least double its planned buybacks of long-dated bonds and continued steady inflows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. A Senate procedural vote on the CLARITY Act failed on September 15 but did not significantly impede the market's climb.
Ethereum Outperforms Major Coins
Ethereum gained 71% during the quarter to reach $2,684, outperforming Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies. The gain was supported by net inflows of $3.1 billion into US spot Ethereum ETF products, which erased all outflows from the first half of the year.
Trading Activity Declines
Despite the market cap recovery, trading participation weakened. Average daily volume fell 8.6% from Q2 to $73.3 billion, marking a third consecutive quarterly decline. Spot trading volume at the top ten centralized exchanges dropped 14.2% to $1.65 trillion, while Ethereum's trading volume fell 23.2% to $11.5 billion.
Open interest on perpetual futures contracts showed stronger growth, rising 40.6% and closing above $100 billion for the first time since Q3 2025, indicating increased leverage activity relative to spot buying.
Exchange Market Shifts
Binance expanded its spot market share to 42.7% from 38.7% in Q2 and remained the only exchange with double-digit share. The platform added $12.7 billion to open interest. KuCoin and Deribit experienced declines of 41.2% and 18.9% respectively, a divergence CoinGecko characterized as uneven rather than broad-based.
Bitget dropped to 11th place following a September hack, having already seen monthly trading volume decline from $37.8 billion in June to $15.7 billion in July.
Robinhood Chain Activity
Robinhood Chain, which launched on July 1, recorded more than $88.9 billion in trading volume during Q3. Although the network was designed with tokenized stocks and real-world assets in mind, meme coin traders became the primary source of activity, with average daily transactions reaching 9.5 million in Q3, though most newly deployed tokens failed to gain traction.
Recent Price Movement
Bitcoin fell to a monthly low of $80,200 on October 15 amid pressure from Asian stock markets and September inflation data that came in slightly above forecasts.
