The Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA) disclosed on September 17 that hackers accessed its online gaming portal, potentially exposing sensitive data held by crypto casinos licensed through the island's regulator.
Curaçao has become a primary jurisdiction for online casinos due to its permissive gambling laws. The island hosts licenses for major crypto casino operators including Rollbit, 1xBet, and Stake, though Rollbit's license appears to have been revoked this month.
The CGA said in its announcement that while unauthorized access had been contained, the investigation remained ongoing and had not yet established the full scope of the incident. The regulator stated it was assessing whether information had been accessed and evaluating potential consequences.
Users on social media have speculated that the breach could expose personal information about casino operators, including photo identification and other documentation, which could potentially be leaked or used for extortion.
The CGA said it would directly notify any affected individuals, applicants, licensees, or other stakeholders if the hack impacts them.
Curaçao's gambling regulator has been known for conducting only minimal background checks on casinos seeking licenses. The jurisdiction attempted to strengthen its regulatory reputation this year by introducing new legislation requiring transparent anti-money laundering and identity verification procedures.
