Binance co-founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao has praised U.S. law enforcement agencies for their role in handling the aftermath of a security breach that resulted in losses of over $6 billion. Zhao credited these agencies with helping to contain the wider impact on the cryptocurrency market.
Following the incident, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) attributed the hack to a North Korean hacking group known as Tradertraitor. Zhao highlighted the assistance provided by agencies including the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service (USSS), and the IRS, noting their work in tracking and freezing stolen funds.
The hack caused bitcoin to drop to a multi-week low of $76,320, triggering over $1.5 billion in liquidations and pulling down shares of crypto-related companies like Coinbase and Strategy. However, Zhao stated that the swift actions of law enforcement prevented an even deeper market downturn.
The FBI has actively tracked the movement of the stolen assets across the blockchain, called on private sector entities to block related transactions, and published a list of Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Solana addresses linked to the North Korean actors.
Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts downplayed the hack's effect on Bitcoin's long-term trajectory. Firms such as Cantor-Fitzgerald and TD Cowen pointed out that the incident exposed weaknesses in Binance's security infrastructure rather than any flaws in Bitcoin's code. Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan also predicted that prices would eventually recover to prior levels.
