Decentralized exchanges, or DEXs, allow traders to swap cryptocurrencies directly from their own wallets using smart contracts, with no intermediary holding funds or requiring account creation.
Recent data shows DEXs have captured a growing share of crypto trading activity. Over the past 30 days, spot DEXs processed $273.795 billion in volume while perpetual futures DEXs processed $614.25 billion, according to DefiLlama. The 24-hour figures stood at $5.72 billion for spot trading and $8.821 billion for perps.
Market Share Growth
DEX share of spot trading volume has risen significantly over two years. From January 2024 to January 2026, their share climbed from 6.9% to 13.6%, while spot volume on DEXs more than doubled from $95.86 billion to $231.29 billion. Perpetual futures on DEXs grew even faster, with volume rising from $81.74 billion to $739.48 billion over the same period, increasing their share of all perps volume from 2.0% to 10.2%.
The rise was partly driven by a memecoin boom beginning in May 2024. A peak share of 24.5% occurred in June 2025, linked to Binance Alpha 2.0 routing trades through PancakeSwap. DEX share has remained above 10% since January 2025.
Centralized exchanges still dominate overall trading, handling more than $1 trillion in monthly spot volume and processing nearly $80 trillion across spot and perps in 2025.
Leading Platforms and Chains
Uniswap led spot DEXs with $90.95 billion in 30-day volume, about 33% of the DEX total. PancakeSwap followed with $29.29 billion. In the second quarter of 2026, Uniswap held a 41.2% share of top 10 spot DEX volume.
By blockchain, Solana led 30-day DEX volume at $77.377 billion, followed by Robinhood Chain at $51.971 billion and Ethereum at $42.148 billion. However, the quarterly picture differed, with Ethereum reclaiming first place in Q2 2026 at a 27.2% share, while Solana fell 43.9% to third place.
In perpetual futures, Hyperliquid dominated with $203.285 billion in 30-day volume, approximately 33% of perp DEX volume. Aster and Variational followed with $63.396 billion and $63.061 billion respectively.
Volume Trends Through 2026
The top 10 spot DEXs traded $408.9 billion in the second quarter of 2026, down 26.5% from $556.4 billion in the first quarter. Monthly volume peaked at $215 billion in January 2026 before falling to $129 billion in May, then recovering slightly to $138 billion in June.
Top perp DEXs saw volume fall 16.7% quarter over quarter, from $2.0 trillion in Q1 2026 to $1.7 trillion in Q2, though volume returned above $600 billion in June after dropping to $505.1 billion between March and April.
Market Size and Outlook
The Business Research Company valued the DEX market at $44.22 billion in 2025 and $53.97 billion in 2026, representing 22% growth. The firm forecasts the market to reach $120.65 billion by 2030 at a similar growth rate. This estimate measures revenue rather than trading volume.
Recent developments include Coinbase offering US users access to DEX liquidity within its app as of August 2025, and PancakeSwap paying liquidity providers 90% of fees in Infinity pools on Robinhood Chain as of September 2026.
A September 2026 request by Andreessen Horowitz and the DeFi Education Fund to the SEC for a safe harbor from exchange registration for DEXs could shape how US users access decentralized platforms going forward.
