Ethena Shifts USDe Backing Toward AAA-Rated Collateralized Loan Obligations

Ethena Labs is reorienting its synthetic dollar USDe toward institutional-grade collateral. The protocol has begun backing its stablecoin with AAA-rated collateralized loan obligations, marking a significant shift from its earlier reliance on crypto-native basis trades.

In June 2026, Ethena allocated $200 million to the Janus Henderson Anemoy AAA CLO Fund, executed through a partnership with Centrifuge on the Solana blockchain. Ethena's Risk Committee approved the position and set a cap of approximately $310 million, allowing room for further deployment.

Growing Real-World Asset Exposure

Real-world assets now account for roughly 11% of USDe's total backing, a substantial portion for a protocol that previously depended almost entirely on perpetual futures positions. Perpetual futures had already declined to about 11% of USDe's backing by April 2026.

The US AAA CLO market is valued at approximately $500 to $600 billion, with instruments offering floating-rate yields tied to SOFR at a reported quarterly mean spread of about 61 basis points. Additional integrations through Securitize have expanded USDe's tokenized AAA CLO holdings beyond the initial allocation.

Institutional Strategy and Track Record

Ethena founder Guy Young has characterized the expansion as a deliberate move toward institutional-grade strategies designed to reduce dependency on crypto market volatility. Partnerships with Anchorage Digital and Coinbase Asset Management underscore the protocol's focus on institutional investors.

No AAA-rated CLO tranche has ever experienced a principal loss, providing a historical foundation for the strategy.

Current Scale and Future Direction

As of September 2026, USDe's circulating supply was approximately $4.7 billion, with supply remaining in the $4.5 to $4.7 billion range throughout the transition. The current 11% RWA allocation suggests significant room for further scaling, while the $310 million position cap on the Janus Henderson fund indicates the Risk Committee's comfort with expansion.
