Ethereum has completed its first atomic transaction between the mainnet and a Layer 2 network, according to an announcement by Eduardo Antuna, a core contributor to the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ). The transaction demonstrates that atomic synchronous composability now functions on the live Ethereum mainnet.
In the mainnet test, the transaction moved 0.001 Ether while simultaneously updating a connected rollup in the same block. Both actions were completed together in a single atomic operation, where all linked actions occur together or the entire transaction is canceled if any part fails.
Addressing Layer 2 Fragmentation
The milestone addresses a growing challenge as network activity increasingly moves to Layer 2 solutions. Currently, users often require extra transactions, bridges, or additional steps to move assets between Ethereum layers, which can fragment funds and complicate network usability.
The EEZ approach aims to allow Layer 2 networks to interact more directly with Ethereum contracts and liquidity, making different layers function as a more integrated system rather than separate networks.
Framework Development and Timeline
The Ethereum Economic Zone was built by Gnosis and Zisk with support from the Ethereum Foundation. Following the mainnet test, Gnosis Chain plans to launch its first live EEZ rollup block between December 2026 and January 2027.
