Ethereum Leverage Crashes 91% as ETH Holds $2,500 on Institutional Demand

Ethereum traders rapidly unwound leveraged positions in late August, with combined open interest on Binance and Bybit collapsing 90.9% to $102 million as of August 30th, down from $1.12 billion added over the previous week.

The deleveraging reflects a sharp pullback from aggressive positioning during ETH's advance toward $2,500. Binance's open interest fell from $843 million to $94 million, while Bybit dropped from $277 million to $8 million.

Despite the reduction in derivative positions, ETH has remained near $2,500, suggesting the rally is increasingly supported by fundamental demand rather than leverage expansion. This shift indicates that price stability depends less on rapid growth in futures positioning.

Spot ETF Inflows Fill the Gap

Institutional demand through spot ETFs has emerged as the primary price support mechanism. U.S.-based Ethereum ETFs attracted approximately $1.5 billion in investment over 10 days from August 15th onward, with BlackRock's ETHA accounting for 71.9% of total inflows, or roughly $1.02 billion.

At ETH price levels between $2,400 and $2,500, these inflows represent approximately 570,000 to 630,000 ETH in net purchases. Unlike leveraged futures trading, spot ETF purchases create direct demand in the underlying asset without adding derivative exposure.

Whale Supply Tests Market Demand

Institutional buying now faces a supply test from whale activity. Wallet 0x2Ea2 deposited 40,881 ETH worth $100.67 million across major exchanges including Binance, OKX, Bybit, Kraken, and Gate over two days. One transfer sent 8,629 ETH to Binance within a single day.

Exchange deposits do not necessarily signal immediate sales but make the assets available for trading. The whale retains 10,506 ETH, worth roughly $25.52 million, representing additional potential supply. For ETH to maintain price stability near $2,500, institutional spot ETF demand will need to absorb continued selling pressure.
