Ethereum [ETH] delivered a 70% return in Q3 2026, marking its strongest-ever quarterly performance. The asset's Open Interest reached $30 billion, with an average Long/Short ratio of 1.54 across popular exchanges, indicating dominant long positioning.
Institutional buying and whale accumulation have reinforced bullish momentum. The ETH/BTC pair approached a key resistance level at 0.033, with a breakout potentially signaling continued upside. Leveraged positions contributed to recent price gains, though Bitcoin faced a 4.45% correction from its $87,395 local high reached on September 21st. Ethereum declined 5.31% over three days during the same period.
Volatility Marks Price Validation
Ethereum's 30-day realized volatility reached 0.73, the highest level since March, before declining 38% to 0.45. This volatility spike coincided with the asset's breakout past the $2,500 supply zone. While the subsequent decline in volatility suggests a lull in price action, analysts view it as confirmation of the breakout's validity rather than a sign of weakening momentum.
Long-Term Holders Maintain Positions
The MVRV ratio, which measures whether holders are profitable or unprofitable on average, provides insight into holder behavior. The 365-day MVRV moved into positive territory, mirroring conditions from July 2025, when strong institutional demand drove a swift rally. The 3-month MVRV ratio also showed strong profitability.
Notably, dormant circulation—a measure of distribution activity—remained subdued compared to July 2025 despite similar profit-taking incentives. This suggests that long-term Ethereum holders are holding their positions more firmly than they did a year earlier, indicating strong bullish conviction and supporting the continuation of the bull run.
