Ethereum has reclaimed the $2,500 price level following several days of aggressive bullish momentum that strengthened its short-term market structure. On August 21st, the daily candle closed above this key supply zone, turning former resistance into a level for buyers to defend.
The advance pushed Ethereum’s price above all key Exponential Moving Averages, indicating that buyers had absorbed a major layer of overhead selling pressure. Holding the $2,500 level could help establish a foundation for further gains, provided the movement is backed by demand beyond simple price momentum.
Metrics Supporting the Move
Several indicators have emerged to support the credibility of the breakout:
- U.S. Buying Demand: Ethereum’s Coinbase Premium Index surged by 60%, pointing to stronger buying activity in the United States relative to other markets.
- Fund Holdings: Fund holdings reached a weekly high of 5.8 million ETH, valued at approximately $14.5 billion near the $2,500 price point.
- Valuation Levels: The MVRV Z-Score stood at -1.012, keeping Ethereum below historically overheated valuation levels and indicating institutional demand without extreme valuation.
Leverage and Liquidation Dynamics
Market dynamics also showed a shift in leverage following recent liquidations. Ethereum’s Funding Rate climbed 19% over a 24-hour period, reflecting higher demand for leveraged long positions. At the same time, the Estimated Leverage Ratio fell to a monthly low of 0.73.
This divergence demonstrated stronger bullish positioning alongside lower system-wide leverage. The decline in leverage followed a short squeeze near $2,200 that liquidated approximately 276,000 ETH, valued at $673 million. This unwind helped clear considerable bearish exposure while preventing the broader market from becoming excessively leveraged.
If buyers successfully defend the $2,500 support level, the asset could eye resistance near $3,000. Conversely, a daily close below $2,500 could invalidate the breakout and extend ongoing consolidation.
