Ethereum Transaction Fees Drop 87% as Network Capacity Expands

Ethereum transaction fees have declined significantly, falling from $0.72 per transfer on April 21st to $0.095 per transfer as of mid-September, representing an 87% decrease. This drop has occurred even as ETH trades at higher market values than during the earlier fee spike.

Network Upgrades Expand Capacity

The primary drivers behind the fee reduction are softer mainnet demand during the summer period and expanded network capacity. Fewer active users competing for blockspace reduced pressure on network throughput, allowing transaction costs to fall accordingly.

The Fusaka upgrade introduced higher blob throughput, increasing the amount of data the network can process per block. Additionally, a raised gas limit of 60 million gives each block more room to process transactions, spreading demand across a larger pool of available space.

Layer 2 networks have absorbed a substantial share of execution that once competed directly for mainnet blockspace, further easing congestion on the main network.

Impact on Network Usage

Lower transaction fees have reduced barriers to participation for everyday activity including swaps, transfers, DeFi positions, stablecoin movements, and ERC-20 token activity. However, cheaper execution alone does not indicate that demand is strengthening again.

ETH Price Action

Ethereum traded at $2,441.34 as of mid-September, reflecting a 2.20 percent increase over the prior 24 hours, with trading volume reaching $12.198 billion. Over the preceding seven days, ETH posted a 0.60 percent decline.

ETH bounced from a support zone between $2,365 and $2,380 and is testing a broken rising trendline near $2,460. A successful reclaim of this trendline could bring movement toward the $2,520 to $2,530 resistance range, while rejection could send ETH back toward support near $2,365.
