Summer Mersinger, formerly a commissioner with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), is stepping down as CEO of the Blockchain Association and leaving the advocacy organization at year’s end. The departure comes after one of the group’s key legislative priorities faced a significant setback in Congress.
On Friday, the Blockchain Association announced that Mersinger would step down as CEO on Oct. 16. Kristin Smith, the group’s former chief executive, is set to return to lead the organization as interim CEO. Mersinger originally joined the Blockchain Association in June 2025 after departing the CFTC three years prior to the scheduled conclusion of her second term as a commissioner.
Reflecting on her departure, Mersinger stated that she joined the association from the CFTC to help secure clear rules and a credible, unified voice for the industry in Washington.
The organization highlighted Mersinger's work to advance the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins (GENIUS Act) and her efforts to foster regulatory clarity at both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the CFTC.
However, the announcement notably omitted mention of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a bill under consideration in the Senate that the Blockchain Association had repeatedly urged lawmakers to support. A cloture motion for the bill failed to secure sufficient votes from Democrats and Republicans earlier this month, leading experts to anticipate that the legislation will remain in limbo until 2027. The Blockchain Association did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding Mersinger's plans for 2027.
