Fairshake, the largest cryptocurrency-linked political action committee, is allocating $30 million toward a campaign against Democrat Sherrod Brown as he seeks to return to the Senate. The spending represents 25% of Fairshake's $120 million war chest and includes advertising and direct mail efforts.
The campaign follows the Senate's failure to pass cloture on the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, known as the CLARITY Act. Brown, who previously served as Senate Banking Committee chair until losing his seat in 2024, had opposed crypto regulation during his tenure.
Brown has recently adjusted his position on the industry. "Crypto has a part, a role, in our economy. They do. They likely will for a lot of years to come," he said in a recent interview, adding that he had no immediate interest in pursuing stricter regulations.
Fairshake's spending represents a decrease from its 2024 investment against Brown, when it deployed $40 million. The PAC is funded by major crypto institutions including Coinbase, Ripple, and A16z, along with other minority donors.
The organization states it "supports candidates committed to securing the United States as the home to innovators building the next generation of the internet." Analysts expect the group to focus spending against Democrats, who opposed the CLARITY Act due to concerns over ethical provisions.
Some industry observers have flagged potential consequences of the campaign. Dennis Porter, CEO and co-founder of the Satoshi Action Fund, characterized the move as strategically problematic, noting that if Brown is defeated, Senator Elizabeth Warren could take the Senate Banking Committee chair should Democrats maintain control. Warren has opposed crypto regulation in its current form multiple times.
