Fidelity Strategist Flags $80,000 Bitcoin Level as Confirmation for $100,000 Target

Bitcoin is holding above $80,000, a technical level that Fidelity Investments' director of global macro Jurrien Timmer identified as confirmation of a double bottom chart pattern. Bitcoin traded at $84,647 on Sunday, approximately 18% below the $100,000 target Timmer associates with breaking past this resistance.

Timmer outlined his analysis in a recent post, noting that Bitcoin's weekly chart shows this year's lows at $60,033 in February and $57,742 in late June. The double bottom pattern—where price hits a similar floor twice before climbing—would confirm a move toward $100,000 if sustained above $80,000.

Beyond the near-term target, Timmer pointed to Bitcoin's power law model, which fits long-run price movements to a curve over time. Under this model, Bitcoin holding above $60,000 signals the start of a new bull market cycle targeting $300,000 by 2029. This represents a shift from Timmer's December outlook, when he raised bear market concerns and warned of a possible decline to between $65,000 and $75,000.

Futures market positioning adds another dimension to the outlook. Tom McClellan, editor of The McClellan Market Report, tracks the Commitments of Traders report published weekly by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. McClellan noted that speculators such as hedge funds recently hit a record net long position in Bitcoin futures, with bullish bets far outweighing bearish ones. According to McClellan, these traders were adding to long positions rather than harvesting gains during recent price movements, suggesting confidence in further appreciation.

Some technical signals remain mixed. Earlier reports flagged concerns including weaker exchange-traded fund flows and spot demand. CryptoQuant's bull market line sits at $81,700, Bitcoin's one-year average close, with current prices about $3,000 above that threshold. A decline back below $80,000 would erase the confirmation signal Timmer's $100,000 target depends on.
