Tom Lee Connects Ethereum Growth to Tokenization and AI
Fundstrat co-founder Tom Lee stated on September 8, 2026, that Ethereum will gain value against Bitcoin over the next couple of years. Lee, who serves as the chairperson of Bitmine Immersion Technologies' board, views Ether as essential infrastructure for institutional finance rather than just a speculative asset.
According to Lee, two main factors drive this outlook: tokenization and agentic AI. Tokenization involves moving assets such as Treasuries, real estate, and equities onto the blockchain, with Ethereum currently holding over $12 billion in tokenized U.S. Treasury products. The second factor, agentic AI, refers to autonomous systems that Lee believes will soon require independent transaction settlement capabilities, which Ethereum's smart contracts can facilitate.
Bitmine Expands Holdings and Staking Operations
Lee's comments coincided with a disclosure from Bitmine Immersion Technologies regarding a purchase of 28,086 ETH, bringing its total holdings to 5,929,198 tokens as of September 7. Valued at approximately $14.8 billion at $2,495 per token, this position represents 4.9% of Ethereum's total supply of 122 million tokens.
Bitmine reported that roughly 85% of its ETH is staked through its MAVAN platform and partners, projecting $330 million in annual staking revenue based on a 2.61% seven-day yield. The firm's total assets stand at $15.7 billion, which includes $593 million in cash and marketable securities, a $180 million stake in Beast Industries, $91 million in Eightco Holdings, and 211 Bitcoin.
Market Conditions and Catalysts
Lee's thesis relies on the ETH/BTC ratio rising from multi-year lows. While the ratio recently climbed to 0.02994—remaining well below its 2021 high of approximately 0.08—Lee outlined four potential catalysts for the end of the year:
- Passage of the CLARITY Act
- Return of sidelined capital
- Asian investors rotating into crypto
- Institutions chasing performance
Tom DeMark, founder of DeMark Analytics and a Bitmine adviser, anticipates a sharp upward move in the coming weeks following a sideways trading period in August. Meanwhile, market figures showed Ether trading at $2,471.92, down 1.39%, while Bitmine shares closed at $24.97, marking a 5.6% decline.
