The cybersecurity working group of the Group of Seven has called quantum computing a security and economic threat to public and private organizations, urging governments and businesses to prepare defenses now. The group comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
In a new report, the G7 warned that although the exact timeline remains uncertain, recent advances suggest quantum computers capable of breaking widely used public-key cryptography mechanisms may emerge. Data stolen and stored today could be decrypted by such systems, which could also break digital signatures, enable impersonation, and expose companies and their supply chains.
The group called for organizations to adopt post-quantum cryptography (PQC) to protect against both classical and quantum attacks. The G7 emphasized that transitioning to PQC requires early engagement, coordinated planning, and informed decision-making across public and private sectors rather than isolated efforts by individual organizations.
The same class of public-key cryptography that protects digital infrastructure also secures blockchain wallets and authorizes cryptocurrency transactions, though the G7 report does not specifically address cryptocurrency.
Blockchain Industry Response
Bitcoin developers are considering post-quantum proposals including BIP-360 to prepare the network for new signature schemes. Bitcoin's decentralized governance structure complicates such transitions, as major security changes require broad support from developers, miners, businesses, and users. Bitcoin holders would also need mechanisms to move funds from vulnerable addresses without disrupting the network.
Ethereum researchers are planning replacements for several cryptographic components used by accounts, validators, and applications. One recent proposal would rebuild Ethereum's deposit contract to support the larger keys required by post-quantum systems.
Solana may face a simpler migration path due to its use of EdDSA signatures. The Solana Foundation has tested post-quantum signatures on a test network and introduced an optional hash-based vault for protecting funds.
Recommendations for Organizations
The G7 advised governments to support research, public-private partnerships, and national PQC strategies while adding quantum security to procurement requirements. Organizations should identify critical systems and adopt quantum-safe products during scheduled upgrades to manage costs.
The group stated that transitioning to PQC is essential to strengthen collective resilience and safeguard confidential data, supply chains, and critical systems.
