Grayscale Executes 3-for-1 Split on Zcash ETF to Improve Accessibility

Grayscale's Zcash ETF is undergoing a 3-for-1 forward share split scheduled to take effect on September 30. Shareholders of record as of September 28 will receive two additional shares for every share they own, with the split intended to lower the ETF's per-share price while preserving investor value.

The ETF, which trades under the ticker ZCSH on NYSE Arca, launched on August 25 as the world's first Zcash exchange-traded product. As of September 17, the fund had recorded net inflows of $232.3 million since its debut.

Mechanics of the Split

A 3-for-1 forward split reduces the share price proportionately while increasing the number of outstanding shares. An investor holding one share before the split will own three shares afterward, with each representing approximately one-third of the previous net asset value per share. The underlying economic value of each investor's position remains unchanged.

Grayscale illustrated the effect with a hypothetical example: an investor holding 10 shares at $300 each would own 30 shares at $100 each after the split, with the total position still worth $3,000.

Broader Market Access

The lower per-share price could make ZCSH easier to trade in smaller increments through traditional brokerage and investment accounts. Zcash holders can gain exposure to ZEC without directly purchasing, storing, or managing the token.

Grayscale Chief Legal Officer Craig Salm noted that the firm's Zcash vehicle began as the Zcash Investment Trust in 2018, later becoming the first publicly quoted Zcash fund in 2021 before transitioning to an ETF format.

Privacy Protocol Considerations

Zcash uses zero-knowledge proofs to conceal transaction details while supporting selective disclosure for compliance purposes. Salm indicated that bringing Zcash into public markets required more regulatory engagement than usual because of its privacy-preserving features.

Grayscale is directing 100 percent of ZCSH management fees toward Zcash ecosystem development and marketing for the fund.
