Macro analyst Jim Willie has proposed a theoretical scenario in which geopolitical tensions tied to regional conflicts, combined with concerns over bond market stability, could prompt countries to seek neutral settlement alternatives to U.S. Treasuries for international trade.
Willie argued that nations hesitant to hold debt from countries perceived as devaluing their currencies through monetary expansion would seek alternatives without political associations, suggesting XRP as a potential candidate for such settlements.
DTCC Settlement Developments
Willie drew attention to a Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation announcement confirming that Stellar's XLM would support settlement for certain stocks and bonds, including S&P 500 and Russell 2000-linked instruments. He noted that derivatives settlement, which he estimated at approximately $4 trillion annually, has not yet been assigned a confirmed digital asset for settlement purposes.
Volume Analysis
Willie performed a calculation to illustrate the scale involved: if 1 percent of the $4 trillion annual derivatives market were routed through XRP, it would represent $40 trillion annually, or roughly $3 trillion monthly in transaction volume. He suggested that such throughput would be impractical at XRP's current price levels, implying significantly higher valuations would be necessary for functional settlement capacity.
Important Clarifications
Willie's remarks constitute speculative analysis rather than confirmed policy or official guidance. The DTCC has made no announcement regarding XRP involvement in derivatives settlement. Any price projections discussed represent the analyst's independent extrapolation and should not be attributed to Ripple, the DTCC, or regulatory authorities.
