Grok placed 59.5% of all AI agent trading volume on Coinbase during the week of September 14-21, nearly 40 times the share held by ChatGPT, according to data shared by the exchange's developer account. Claude captured 13.4% of volume, while custom command-line setups accounted for 21.73%.
Coinbase launched its agent trading platform on June 11 with ChatGPT and Claude as initial partners, allowing users to authorize AI assistants to trade cryptocurrency and derivatives within isolated portfolios with spending limits and trade caps. Three months after launch, the original partners account for less than 15% of agent volume combined.
Several factors may explain Grok's dominance. The AI model operates within X, where cryptocurrency traders already spend considerable time, reducing friction between reading market information and executing trades. The volume measurements are denominated in dollars rather than users, meaning a small number of large traders using Grok could significantly influence the distribution.
This week, Coinbase expanded agent trading to include U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds, enabling trading on thousands of listed securities with zero commissions and fractional share purchases starting at $1. The expansion is accessible through Perplexity, Grok, ChatGPT, and Claude with setup taking as few as three clicks.
Transactions on Coinbase's agent platform are processed through x402, the exchange's micropayment protocol, which has handled more than 230 million transactions totaling over $54 million in volume. Users can set asset permissions, spending limits, and per-action approval requirements to control autonomous trading.
Grok's trading surge coincided with the launch of Grok Bot Creator Rewards, an invite-only pilot program through which X pays developers based on bot usage and repeat engagement. Payouts occur biweekly through X's Original Content Rewards system, with one creator reporting earnings of $500 in the program's first two weeks.
