Hunter Biden is launching a cryptocurrency meme coin called LAPTOP on Base, the Coinbase-developed blockchain network. The token launch is scheduled for September 9, with a total supply of 1 billion tokens.
The name references a Mac laptop Biden left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, which became a significant political issue during the 2020 presidential campaign. The project's website describes LAPTOP as a meme coin intended for entertainment and community rather than as an ownership stake, and notes the token carries significant risk and could lose its entire value.
Airdrop Strategy Targets TRUMP Token Holders
Approximately 20% of LAPTOP's token supply is reserved for airdrops, including distributions to wallets that experienced losses trading the TRUMP meme coin. The TRUMP token, which launched in January 2025, peaked near $73 and reached a fully diluted valuation of roughly $15 billion but now trades around $2.25, representing a decline of approximately 97% from its high.
Event-Based Token Burns and Charity Allocations
Another 30% of LAPTOP's supply is connected to approximately 30 real-world events spanning politics, cryptocurrency, and culture. If designated events occur, tokens assigned to them are scheduled to be permanently destroyed through a process called a "burn." Examples include Democrats winning the 2028 presidential election and Bitcoin reaching a new all-time high. If events do not happen, the corresponding tokens are instead slated for charity under a vesting schedule.
Founder Allocation and Counterfeit Tokens
Founders, including Biden, hold 30% of the token supply, subject to an initial six-month lock and a longer unlocking schedule stretching to 36 months from the token generation event.
At least 14 unofficial tokens using the LAPTOP name have appeared across multiple blockchains, including Robinhood Chain, Solana, TON, and BNB Chain, generating millions in combined trading volume. Solana also hosts an unrelated meme coin using variations of the Hunter Biden laptop name. Biden's initial confirmation did not include a contract address, creating potential confusion for traders.
