Hyperliquid Surges 18% as Crypto Market Faces $1.49 Billion in Liquidations

Cryptocurrency markets declined sharply over the past day, with traders facing $1.49 billion in liquidations. Yet Hyperliquid (HYPE) moved counter to the trend, rising more than 18% following developments that set it apart from the broader downturn.

The sell-off was largely driven by a suspected security incident at Binance. The exchange paused withdrawals late Thursday to investigate a suspected hot wallet breach affecting over $6.2 billion in funds. Tether and Circle subsequently froze stablecoins tied to the transfers, while Binance pledged to cover user losses. Liquidations spiked to $600 million in a single hour as Bitcoin declined, with most liquidations coming from long positions.

Hyperliquid's gains followed distinct catalysts. Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), owner of the New York Stock Exchange, announced a definitive agreement with trade(xyz) to list perpetual futures contracts on Hyperliquid for U.S. users.

Stanley Druckenmiller, managing Duquesne Family Office, disclosed an investment in trade(xyz) through a post on X, stating he was "excited to be an investor in trade(xyz) as they partner with ICE to bring 24/7 perpetual futures on Hyperliquid to the United States." Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, quoted the post with a single word: "Interesting."

HYPE short sellers absorbed $30.86 million of the token's liquidations, according to Coinglass data.

Uncertain Timeline for Launch

The rally's sustainability remains unclear. A previous comparable announcement offers a cautionary example: Kraken parent Payward announced U.S. Hyperliquid futures plans on September 16, triggering HYPE price records within days before declining over subsequent weeks.

The current gains depend on regulatory approval and an official launch date, neither of which has been established. ICE's entry into on-chain perpetuals signals a traditional exchange operator viewing the sector as a legitimate market opportunity.
