MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) stock rose 30% during August 2026, climbing from $94 on August 3 to $127 by month-end, driven by Bitcoin price recovery and the company's increased USD reserves.
The gains reflect two concurrent developments: Bitcoin's recovery and MicroStrategy's debt reduction efforts. The company reduced its net leverage to 0.1% by raising cash through stock sales to settle nearly all its obligations.
Analyst Concerns on Share Dilution
Analyst Jeff Dorman cautioned that MicroStrategy's ongoing stock issuances are diluting shareholder value and undermining the company's core investment thesis. He noted that the stock's market-to-net-asset value (mNAV)—which measures whether MSTR trades at a premium or discount to its Bitcoin holdings—remains at 1 and is unlikely to achieve the significant premiums it once commanded.
Dorman stated that without mNAV growth, MicroStrategy becomes less compelling as a leveraged Bitcoin proxy. He estimated that assuming a flat mNAV, MSTR would offer at most 20% more upside than owning Bitcoin directly, even if Bitcoin doubled in price. He characterized the stock under this scenario as unappealing for investors.
Despite these concerns, Dorman covered his short positions after the company's cash position strengthened. Bitcoin critic Peter Schiff suggested that recent MSTR gains may partly reflect short-position closures, as traders are forced to buy back shares.
Technical Levels
MicroStrategy shares rallied from $92 to $139 between August 18 and August 27, but declined 7.3% to close at $127 on August 28. Support levels include $117 at the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement, with potential further downside to $104 if the broader cryptocurrency market turns bearish and Bitcoin falls below $80,000.
Upside resistance sits at the psychological level of $140, with potential for continued gains to $175 at the 161.8% Fibonacci level if that resistance breaks.
