Midnight is activating smart contract support on its mainnet, according to an announcement by Sebastien Guillemo, CTO of Midnight Foundation. The upgrade will enable private smart contracts and allow anyone to deploy and experiment with applications on the network.
Previously, only a limited number of decentralized applications were whitelisted to operate on Midnight in a restricted environment. With this update, smart contract deployment becomes available to all users.
Midnight operates as a sidechain to Cardano and uses zero-knowledge proofs for its privacy architecture. The blockchain has been positioned as a solution for institutional users seeking privacy-preserving on-chain transactions.
Enhanced Smart Contract Capabilities
The next version of smart contracts will include additional features such as events and composability, enabling decentralized finance applications to communicate with each other. This capability would allow for complex protocols similar to existing lending platforms.
Network Development Timeline
Midnight went live in Q1 2026. The smart contract deployment announcement represents part of the network's transition toward open deployment and decentralization. Dave, a Cardano delegated representative (DRep), characterized the development as a significant milestone, noting that the privacy infrastructure is transitioning from architectural design into usable implementation.
Market Context
The privacy-focused blockchain segment has shown strong performance. Midnight's native token, NIGHT, increased 30% during the week of the announcement.
