OrdinalsBot, the first inscription service in the Bitcoin Ordinals ecosystem, has announced its permanent closure after three years of operation. Rather than quietly shutting down, the project has put its brand, intellectual property, and entire technology stack up for sale through an open, competitive bidding process.
Business Model No Longer Viable
Launched approximately a month after the Ordinals protocol went live in early 2023, the team stated that sustaining the business is no longer viable. In a post on X, the company explained that it had explored restructuring and business pivots before deciding to halt operations.
"Unfortunately, the Ordinals market has contracted sharply over the past year," the post read. The team added that the project achieved many milestones over its three-year lifespan while working to bring new use cases to Bitcoin and create a robust fee market.
Asset Portfolio and Market Context
To prevent its business and technology from gradually losing value, OrdinalsBot opted to sell its complete asset portfolio. The sale package includes the brand, intellectual property, domains, social media accounts, the Discord community, and the GitHub presence, along with more than three years of research and development spanning over 90 code repositories. The company confirmed it has already notified investors and has begun receiving acquisition bids.
OrdinalsBot is part of a wider wave of industry contractions. Data from RootData indicates that more than 120 crypto projects have shut down, filed for bankruptcy, or gone dark throughout 2026. These closures span across wallets, exchanges, NFT platforms, and decentralized finance tools, including recent announcements from BitMEX, BitMart, and Zapper. However, unlike many peers that simply turned off their servers, OrdinalsBot's founders are actively attempting to sell its remaining assets.
