Law enforcement authorities in Pennsylvania are issuing warnings regarding a fraudulent text-message scheme targeting bank customers. The scam reportedly ends with victims handing over cash in parking lots.
According to reports from Springfield Township police cited by Glenside Local, the scheme specifically targets TD Bank customers in Flourtown and Cheltenham. The operation begins when targets receive a fraudulent text message claiming to originate from "TD Security."
The messages inform recipients that their bank accounts have been compromised and instruct them to click an included link. Police state that this link grants scammers access to the victim's device and account information. Fraudsters then transfer funds into checking accounts and manipulate the system to make it appear as though bank staff are managing an active investigation or arrest.
Following these steps, victims are instructed to withdraw cash from their accounts. They are then told to either meet a supposed TD security employee nearby or drop the money into a vehicle in a parking lot, which subsequently drives away.
The police department emphasized that TD Bank will never provide a link via text message to address account issues. Authorities advise customers who receive suspicious texts or calls to contact the bank's main number directly and ask for security.
Police report that TD Bank is aware of the fraudulent activity and is currently assisting affected customers with processing fraud claims and restoring their accounts.
