The cryptocurrency market experienced significant turmoil following a major security breach at Binance. According to preliminary estimates, attackers siphoned approximately $6.3 billion from the exchange, with blockchain partners managing to freeze roughly $3 billion on-chain at the time of announcement. Early investigations suggest the incident may have originated from a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop, though the exchange reported finding no evidence of a wallet private-key leak.
The hack triggered immediate market-wide losses. Bitcoin declined from over $80,000 to around $76,000, while most altcoins followed the downward trend. Binance's native token BNB fell more than 6% to $705. The liquidation impact was substantial, with nearly 240,000 traders affected and total liquidated positions reaching over $1.5 billion daily, with roughly 90% of that occurring after the attack announcement.
Despite the broader market downturn, Pi Network's PI token diverged from the trend. The asset gained approximately 3% over the past day and traded above $0.078 as of reporting time. The token had previously dipped to $0.075 before rising to nearly $0.082, then retreating to around $0.076 before recovering. This placed it roughly 10% above its all-time low of $0.07072, established nearly four months prior.
Pi Network's market capitalization climbed to more than $880 million, positioning it as the 64th-largest digital asset by that measure. The token's gains occurred without an apparent catalyst, with the project's most recent major update having been released the previous week.
