Luxury automaker Porsche has announced the end of its Web3 project and Pioneers Circle community, concluding an initiative that began with the launch of its Porsche 911 nonfungible token (NFT) collection.
In a post on X, the company stated that the project had evolved beyond its initial technology focus to encompass community events alongside various online and offline activities. Despite the closure, Porsche confirmed that the 911 NFTs will remain with their holders and continue to exist onchain. Moving forward, the project's Discord server will become a read-only archive, and active updates on its X account will cease.
The initiative experienced challenges throughout its lifecycle. When the NFT collection debuted in January 2023, it featured a planned supply of 7,500 tokens. However, Porsche halted the minting process following complaints regarding pricing and a lack of utility, which left the final supply at 2,363 tokens.
When Porsche first revealed its Web3 strategy in 2022, then-deputy chairman Lutz Meschke described the automaker's commitment as being "for the long haul," highlighting potential applications in the metaverse, purchasing experiences, and supply chains.
Trading activity for the collection has since declined significantly. Data from OpenSea indicates that while the collection accumulated approximately $20 million in all-time trading volume, volume dropped to about $38,000 over the past year and roughly $2,900 over the past month.
