Privacy Coins Rally 213% Since Bitcoin Peak, With Zcash Surging to Top 10

Privacy coins have emerged as crypto's strongest performers since bitcoin peaked in October 2025, with the sector gaining 213% while every other major category remains lower. Zcash has driven most of the movement, surging 2,496% and climbing from 82nd to 10th by market capitalization.

Bitcoin itself remains about 36% below its October 2025 high, set 335 days prior to the data measurement date. The median asset among the 200 largest cryptocurrencies is down roughly 58% from that level, while other sectors range from decentralized finance at -27% to gaming at -74%.

Privacy Sector Reaches $33.6 Billion in Value

Privacy coins in the top 200 now carry a combined market capitalization of approximately $33.6 billion, up from $7.1 billion a year ago. Nearly half of that increase arrived during the month prior to September 6.

Zcash represents about 62% of the privacy sector's total value. However, the rally extends beyond a single asset. All eight privacy coins with at least a year of trading history are higher. Excluding Zcash, the capitalization-weighted privacy basket has gained 85% over the past year and 56% since bitcoin's October peak.

Monero has roughly doubled, while DASH, XMR, and ZEN have each outperformed bitcoin over the past 90 days. Among the 25 largest crypto assets, only four are above their October 6 levels, with two being privacy coins.

Debate Over Fundamentals and Valuation

Not all observers support Zcash's valuation trajectory. F2Pool co-founder Chun Wang characterized the move as a narrative bid, arguing that market capitalization alone does not place Zcash on equal footing with other major networks.

Wang cited several concerns including Zcash's early Founders' Reward, governance disputes, a vulnerability disclosed in May involving the Orchard privacy pool, and questions about whether optional privacy generates sufficient real-world usage to justify the valuation. He also noted that Zcash required an emergency fix after a four-year bug.

The debate centers on whether privacy has become a durable investment theme or remains the market's most powerful narrative trade. For now, performance data favors the bulls, as privacy is the only sector that has fully escaped the post-bitcoin-peak drawdown.
