Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI), an Austrian banking group with operations spanning Central and Eastern Europe, is partnering with digital investment platform Bitpanda to integrate cryptocurrency trading into its banking apps. The infrastructure could potentially reach as many as 18 million customers across 11 markets in the region.
RBI, which operates roughly 1,300 branches and manages assets exceeding $228 billion, will provide its subsidiaries with a common digital-asset framework that individual banks can adopt at their own pace. Each local bank will determine its own crypto offerings and rollout timing based on regional regulations and customer demand.
Existing Integration in Austria
The partnership builds on an existing model already operating in Austria. Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich-Wien began offering cryptocurrency through its banking platform in 2024, with Bitpanda managing the underlying infrastructure. Banks in Tyrol followed in 2026, providing access to bitcoin and ether.
Regional Regulatory Variations
The rollout across 11 markets faces varied regulatory requirements. European Union member states including Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Croatia operate under the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework, while banks in non-EU jurisdictions must navigate their own licensing regimes. RBI continues reducing its exposure in Russia, which presents an additional complication.
As a result, cryptocurrency offerings will likely differ significantly across the network. Some banks may offer bitcoin and ether, others could provide additional digital assets and savings products, while some may delay their launch.
Integration Within Existing Banking Relationships
A key feature of the arrangement is that customers can access digital assets through their existing bank accounts without requiring a separate exchange account, password, or application. Bitpanda handles the cryptocurrency infrastructure behind the scenes while customers remain within their established banking environment.
