Robinhood shares jumped by nearly 14% on Friday, trading at $108.31 after reaching a session high of $109.71. The rally coincided with a broader recovery in the cryptocurrency market and increased attention from Washington regarding digital asset regulation and prediction markets, both of which represent growing segments of Robinhood's business.
Crypto Market Recovery and Regulatory Attention
Major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, continued to post gains following a renewed call from President Donald Trump for Congress to pass digital-asset market legislation. This legislative push has boosted market sentiment for firms positioned to benefit from clearer United States rules. Robinhood generates revenue from customer cryptocurrency trading, making increased market activity and higher prices favorable for the company.
Meanwhile, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission discussed digital assets and prediction markets during its inaugural Innovation Advisory Committee meeting on August 20. Chairman Michael Selig stated that the agency could begin establishing a crypto-market framework using its existing authority if congressional legislation does not progress.
Growth in Prediction Markets and Operating Figures
Robinhood has also expanded into prediction markets, with customers trading 6.1 billion event contracts in July, marking a 20-fold increase compared to the same period a year earlier. The company's international footprint grew as well with the launch of crypto trading for UK customers through Bitstamp's British operation on August 10.
The company reported mixed operating figures alongside its recent growth. Funded customers increased by 7% year-over-year to 28.5 million, while platform assets rose 19% to $355 billion, despite a 4% decline compared to June. Additionally, margin balances climbed 82% from the previous year to reach $20.7 billion.
Price Levels and Trading Activity
Driven by heavier trading activity, Friday's advance pushed HOOD back above $100 toward the $110 area. Because the $110 level has previously attracted sellers, it serves as the next test for the ongoing price recovery, with potential resistance near the July range of $115 to $120. Conversely, holding the $100 mark would help preserve recent improvements if the upward momentum fades.
