S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko, and Derivnex have completed what they describe as the first privately negotiated financial swap on Canton Network, a blockchain designed for large financial institutions. Trading firms DRW and Marex carried out the transaction using a bond index that Kaiko had converted into a digital token.
Traditional Derivatives on Blockchain Infrastructure
The transaction involved a total return swap, a financial agreement that allows one party to receive the investment performance of an asset or index without owning it, while the other party agrees to make those payments under the contract's terms.
Cameron Drinkwater, chief product operating officer at S&P DJI, stated that "this transaction shows how established benchmark infrastructure can support new institutional market structures."
S&P DJI entered the blockchain space in late 2020, partnering with Lukka, a New York City-based crypto asset software company, to build cryptocurrency indexing capabilities. The transaction demonstrates how these operations can be harmonized through a single blockchain framework rather than relying on multiple distinct networks.
According to Derivnex CEO George Harrington, "Derivnex gives counterparties a common digital representation of a trade from affirmation through its full lifecycle." He added that completing the first OTC swap on Canton shows how this model can work in a live institutional market.
Privacy and Compliance Drive Institutional Adoption
Canton Network is designed to meet strict privacy and regulatory requirements demanded by financial institutions. Unlike public blockchains where transaction details are broadly visible, Canton allows firms to control who can access specific information within the same transaction.
The network also enables different financial applications to communicate and coordinate transactions, including completing related payments and asset transfers together or not at all. This design provides institutions with privacy while avoiding the isolation of separate systems that cannot easily work together.
Major financial institutions exploring Canton's infrastructure include Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Nasdaq, DTCC, JPMorgan, and Visa.
