Solana's Alpenglow upgrade has reached its public test networks, marking progress toward faster transaction finality on the blockchain. The upgrade is now active on both devnet and testnet, providing application developers with environments to test their software before the upgrade potentially reaches the live network.
Alpenglow aims to reduce transaction settlement time to roughly 150 milliseconds—the point at which a transaction becomes irreversible—compared with the current approximately 12.8 seconds. This reduction could accelerate operations such as fund releases on exchanges and payment confirmations for merchants.
How the upgrade works
The upgrade changes how validators reach consensus on the network. Instead of recording validator votes as transactions within blocks, validators will exchange votes directly, allowing agreement to occur in one or two voting rounds.
This change will affect how Solana activity appears on transaction charts. Since validator votes will no longer be recorded as transactions, reported transaction totals will decline even if actual user activity remains unchanged. The Solana Foundation has instructed data providers to adjust their comparative analyses accordingly.
Testing and deployment considerations
The devnet allows developers to test applications using tokens with no real value, while the separate testnet is primarily used to stress-test network software and validator operations. Services that build transaction histories will need to keep competing candidate blocks separate until the network selects a final version to avoid producing incorrect records.
Most applications that simply send transactions and read account balances will require no migration, according to the Foundation's guidance.
The 150-millisecond target remains a figure derived from simulations rather than a result demonstrated under live-market conditions. Additional delays from wallet processing and exchange deposit verification procedures could extend actual settlement times.
No firm launch date has been announced for the mainnet deployment of Alpenglow.
