Solana has raised its maximum transaction size from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, providing developers with additional capacity for complex onchain operations.
According to blockchain data shared by the Solana Foundation, the upgrade went live on the mainnet on Tuesday at the start of epoch 1,035, occurring around 1:00 am UTC.
The network update also introduced the v1 transaction format while maintaining full backward compatibility with legacy transactions. While existing formats continue to function for applications and wallet providers, protocols seeking to utilize the increased size limit must update to the new v1 format.
A spokesperson for the Solana Foundation stated that the change is primarily designed to help developers handle workloads that previously could not fit within a single transaction, such as zero-knowledge proofs, transactions requiring multiple signatures, and new onchain signature schemes.
This network adjustment follows other recent developments on Solana. In August, validators approved a proposal to double the network's annual disinflation rate to reduce the future issuance of its native token, SOL. Additionally, Solana reduced its slot time to 350 milliseconds in August, following earlier plans shared in June to decrease slot times from 400 milliseconds to 200 milliseconds to improve latency and speed up network confirmations.
