Stablecoin payment volumes reached $482B by September 2026, up from $331B in the same period last year, marking a 45% surge driven largely by business adoption. Despite this growth in transaction activity, the overall stablecoin market supply remained largely flat at approximately $304B, representing less than 1% growth for the year.
Business-related payment volumes showed particular strength, increasing 37% to $246B from $179B year-over-year. Transactions involving businesses accounted for 64% of total payment volumes by dollar value. Consumer-to-business transaction counts nearly doubled during the period, though average payment sizes declined, while business-to-business value growth outpaced transaction count increases.
Card Spending Drives Quarterly Records
The third quarter of 2026 saw record stablecoin payment volumes of $72B, with card-based spending increasing tenfold. Small purchases under $50 accounted for 84% of the visible growth in card transactions, enabling stablecoin holders to make micropayments without requiring merchants to directly adopt stablecoins.
Supply Growth Hindered by Yield Constraints
Despite robust payment activity, the stagnation in overall stablecoin supply suggests that broader adoption may require additional incentives. Industry analysis suggests that the ability to earn yield on stablecoin holdings could be a significant catalyst for expansion. Regulatory restrictions, including bans on stablecoin yield under the GENIUS Act and EU regulations prohibiting such yields even on decentralized finance platforms, have limited this growth driver.
JPMorgan projected that without yield incentives, stablecoin market growth could reach only $500B to $600B by 2028, underscoring the potential importance of yield mechanisms for accelerating market expansion beyond current payment volume gains.
