Strategy and Strive announced Monday they purchased a combined 2,305 bitcoins for $182.7 million, according to corporate filings. Strategy acquired 950 BTC for $75.7 million, while Strive purchased 1,355 BTC for $107.7 million.
The announcement coincided with a surge in bitcoin's price. Bitcoin traded at $86,008 on Monday, up 6% over the previous 24 hours, after reaching $86,282 earlier that day.
Strategy, the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, also repurchased $174 million of its STRC perpetual preferred shares. The company has prioritized stock buybacks and building cash reserves over bitcoin purchases this year, and on some occasions sold small portions of its holdings.
Strategy resumed bitcoin purchases in late August after a 10-week hiatus, acquiring nearly $370 million of the cryptocurrency during the final week of that month. Its current bitcoin holdings total 846,000 coins, valued at $72.7 billion at Monday's prices.
Strive, a Nasdaq-listed company, has maintained weekly bitcoin purchases and now ranks as the fifth-largest corporate holder with 26,355 BTC worth $2.2 billion. Strive's stock closed above $30 per share on Friday, exceeding most Wall Street analyst targets.
Strategy's stock traded 8% higher on Monday, while Strive stock was slightly lower. Bitcoin's price remains approximately 30% below its all-time high of $126,080 reached in October.
