Strategy announced that it held 848,517 Bitcoin as of October 25, alongside a third‑quarter period in which gains on digital assets drove its operating results.
Q3 earnings driven by Bitcoin valuation
The company reported $20.91 billion in gains on digital assets, which translated into roughly the same amount of operating income. Net income attributable to common shareholders was $19.12 billion, and diluted earnings were $44.75 per share.
Cash liquidity and financing obligations
Strategy said it held $5.07 billion in U.S. dollar assets, which it described as sufficient to cover 3.4 years of dividend and interest obligations based on its own measurement criteria.
Distinguishing accounting gains from cash
The release noted that increases in market value generate accounting gains that boost reported income without necessarily providing spendable cash. Conversely, a decline in valuation can affect earnings without requiring an immediate cash outlay.
Capital structure considerations
The company emphasized that its financing stack, including common and preferred securities, determines how gains are allocated among shareholders. Preferred shareholders typically have priority over common shareholders for dividends and liquidation proceeds, meaning the gross Bitcoin value does not directly reflect the amount available to common stockholders.
Assessing liquidity coverage
Strategy’s coverage period, based on its cash assets and obligations, was presented as a starting point for evaluating financial resilience. The company cautioned that the coverage depends on the specific obligations included and the liquidity of supporting assets.
Investors are advised to consider three key questions: the quantity of Bitcoin held, the distribution of gains and risks across securities, and the company’s ability to meet cash commitments under varying market conditions.
