Study: Gas fees cut small Uniswap positions' profitability by half

Transaction fees significantly reduced profitability for small liquidity providers on Uniswap, according to a blockchain data analysis released by Bitquery on October 16. Among closed positions below $1,000 across eight Ethereum v3 pools studied, 51% outperformed simply holding the underlying tokens before gas costs, but only 18% remained ahead after accounting for transaction expenses, with a median gas bill of 67 cents for that group.

The impact of transaction costs varied sharply by position size. Across all eight pools analyzed, 49% of 71,166 closed positions beat holding before gas; this figure dropped to 34% after gas was deducted. For positions above $1 million, the effect was minimal: 60% beat holding before gas and 59% afterward. But for the smallest positions, gas separable the two win rates by 33 percentage points.

Gas disproportionately affects small deposits

Bitquery's size breakdown illustrated the pattern:

  • Below $1,000: 51% beat holding before gas, 18% after
  • $1,000–$10,000: 45% before, 36% after
  • $10,000–$100,000: 50% before, 45% after
  • $100,000–$1 million: 55% before, 51% after
  • Above $1 million: 60% before, 59% after

The study covered the period from October 14, 2025 through October 13, 2026, comparing position returns plus collected fees against the value of holding the same tokens at exit prices. For the smallest band, even modest transaction savings could meaningfully affect outcomes when a position's advantage over holding was already narrow.

Uniswap v4's technical improvements

Uniswap's forthcoming v4 version introduces flash accounting, which can reduce transfer overhead for liquidity providers. This mechanism records internal amounts owed during an operation and transfers tokens only for final net balance changes, potentially eliminating unnecessary intermediate token movements between pool contracts.

However, v4 retains the concentrated-liquidity mechanics introduced in v3, where providers choose a price range for their capital. As prices move, the quantities of the two tokens in a position change, and liquidity outside its range stops earning fees. A provider can therefore save gas and still finish behind a holding benchmark if inventory losses exceed fee income.

Bitquery's separate activity study covering July 15 through October 13 showed v4 liquidity additions rising from approximately 1,288 per day in the first week to 4,474 in the final week, roughly 3.5 times higher, while v3 remained near 1,300 per day.

Methodology and limitations

The return study excluded positions opened and closed within a single block, as well as open positions whose unclaimed fees could not be assigned through event-based accounting. The aggregate analysis across all eight pools reported $41.6 million in collected fees, a $60.6 million inventory shortfall against holding, and $1.4 million in gas expenses, totaling $20.4 million behind holding overall.
