Bristol Crown Court on October 15 sentenced three men to prison for an aggravated burglary targeting a cryptocurrency holder. Terroll Paul, 31, and Pierre Madzou, 30, both from Barking, London, received six-year and five-and-a-half-year sentences respectively. Mohamed Samagassi, 37, of no fixed address, was sentenced to five years. All three pleaded guilty in August to charges of aggravated burglary.
In the early hours of May 15, the three men forced their way into a home in Bristol and assaulted the victim, striking him over the head and demanding cryptocurrency. The victim sustained a substantial injury requiring hospital treatment. Police arrested the suspects at the scene after the victim's teenage sister alerted authorities.
The victim described the lasting psychological impact of the attack in a personal statement read during sentencing. "Before, I was bubbly, talkative, and outgoing, but now I would describe myself as tense and apprehensive," the victim said.
Investigating officer PC Gemma Childs highlighted the bravery of the victim's younger sister, whose quick actions prevented further harm and led directly to the offenders' apprehension. "Her quick thinking in this situation is nothing short of remarkable," Childs said.
The sentencing comes amid a documented rise in violent U.K. robberies targeting individuals believed to hold significant cryptocurrency wealth. Recent cases have included assaults on a businessman and his pregnant wife at their home, and evidence presented in court regarding a cybercriminal who orchestrated multiple violent home invasions attempting to extort millions in cryptocurrency from high-net-worth holders.
