Donald Trump Executes Over 1,000 Trades in June Filing
Donald Trump purchased Berkshire Hathaway shares for the first time in June as part of a total of 1,051 separate financial transactions spanning stocks, bonds, and exchange-traded funds. According to a financial filing released on August 22, the trades carried values ranging from $78.1 million to $263.1 million, reflecting federal disclosure rules that permit reporting in broad value ranges rather than exact figures.
During the month under review, Trump's purchases exceeded $49 million in securities, while his sales surpassed $28.5 million. The high volume of transactions is unusual, as federal rules only mandate disclosures for securities transactions valued above $1,000, and the majority of his reported activity fell into value bands below $1 million.
Market Moves Following Federal Reserve Uncertainty
On June 18, following a market drop on June 17 driven by monetary policy uncertainty after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's first meeting, Trump executed several prominent stock moves. He sold between $1 million and $5 million each of Meta Platforms and Motorola Solutions. Concurrently, he invested the same dollar range into four companies: Berkshire Hathaway, Cintas, Visa, and Mastercard.
Additional June activity included adjustments to exchange-traded fund exposure. Trump purchased shares in the iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF, Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, and iShares GSCI Commodity Dynamic Roll Strategy ETF, while also adding multiple municipal bonds. Conversely, he trimmed holdings in the Vanguard Short-Term Bond ETF, Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund, and Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF.
Defense and Cryptocurrency Activity
Trump engaged in multiple trades involving defense stocks. He purchased between $1,001 and $15,000 of Palantir Technologies on June 3, sold portions of it across June 16 and June 18 following a U.S. and Iran peace agreement on June 14, and made another smaller purchase on June 23. His defense sector activity also included purchasing RTX and buying and selling shares of Northrop Grumman.
Crypto-related activity also appeared in the filing. Between June 12 and June 23, Trump sold between $116,003 and $315,000 of Coinbase Global shares while Bitcoin lost ground, before reversing direction to buy between $50,001 and $100,000 on June 24.
The disclosure of Trump's Berkshire Hathaway purchase coincides with a period of change for the conglomerate, which recently reported a multi-billion-dollar drop in its cash position during the second quarter—marking the first meaningful decline in its cash reserves since early 2022.
