US Becomes Net Bitcoin Importer While Dollar-Backed Stablecoins Gain Global Traction

The United States has become a net importer of bitcoin this year for the first time since 2022, according to a recent Chainalysis report. Simultaneously, the country is exporting dollar-backed stablecoins globally, creating a distinct dynamic in cryptocurrency flows.

The trend reveals a sharp divide between retail and institutional activity. Transfers below $10,000 remain net outbound from the US, while larger transactions move strongly inbound. Institutional buyers in the $10 million-plus bracket alone accounted for 53,200 bitcoin flowing into the country.

Institutional Accumulation and ETF Growth

Chainalysis attributes the inbound shift partly to the rise of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, which launched in early 2024 and have steadily increased US participation in global crypto activity. The report also notes that the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve has created additional sovereign demand, though no formal federal purchasing program exists.

The pattern reflects a broader migration of bitcoin from exchange balances to institutional structures such as ETFs and corporate treasuries, reducing the amount of coins readily available on trading platforms.

Global Demand for Tokenized Dollars

The stablecoin picture tells a complementary story. According to the report, 99.1% of stablecoin order-book volume is tied to the US dollar. Users outside the US increasingly rely on dollar-backed assets because they provide access to dollars without requiring an American bank account.

This dynamic reinforces connections to US financial markets, as stablecoin issuers typically hold reserves in short-dated US government debt. The real-world assets sector reinforces the trend, with the global RWA market exceeding $36 billion in the second quarter, up 135% from the previous period. Tokenized US Treasuries alone accounted for $15.42 billion, representing nearly 43% of the total market.

The Emerging Pattern

Together, these flows suggest a bifurcated market: foreign users are increasingly demanding tokenized dollars and US debt, while American institutions are accumulating bitcoin.
