Wall Street Gripped by Extreme Fear as AI Stock Losses Mount

CNN's Fear & Greed Index sank to 18 on Friday, marking deep "Extreme Fear" territory after the Nasdaq declined 4.5% for the week. The gauge measures investor sentiment on a scale of 0 to 100 using seven market signals: market momentum, stock price strength, stock price breadth, put and call options ratios, market volatility, safe-haven demand, and junk bond demand.

Traders lost nearly $52 million on leveraged AI and chip stock bets in 10 minutes on Saturday, when Wall Street was closed. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 11.4% for the week, marking its worst performance since April 2025, while the broader Dow rose 0.7%.

CoreWeave, a cloud computing firm providing AI infrastructure, declined approximately 25%, with its bonds hitting new lows amid broader pressures in the AI debt market. Rising inflation data also renewed expectations for higher interest rates, which would increase borrowing costs across sectors.

Trading Circuit Breakers and Market Structure

Modern markets include automatic trading halts designed to prevent rapid declines. A 7% or 13% drop in the S&P 500 triggers a 15-minute pause, while a 20% fall halts trading for the day. These brakes were absent during the 1987 Black Monday crash, when the Dow lost 22.6% in a single session.

However, perpetual futures traded on crypto exchanges operate around the clock without these protections. When prices fall sharply, exchanges force-close leveraged positions, and cascading liquidations can accelerate losses. Roughly $38 million of Saturday's losses affected traders betting on higher prices through these mechanisms.

Sector Concentration and Outlook

Information technology comprises approximately 39% of the S&P 500, leaving index-fund holders heavily exposed to tech volatility. Short sellers profited approximately $32 billion on chip stocks over seven days, according to S3 Partners data.

Market analysts offered varied assessments of the pullback. Some attributed the decline to normal consolidation after aggressive recent gains in chip stocks. Monday's market open will indicate whether weekend selling reflected sustained market pressure or thin trading conditions. The larger question facing investors is whether concerns about AI sector debt spread beyond heavily leveraged companies.
