Wall Street's fear gauge, the VIX index, jumped 21.5% on Friday to 19.99 as the S&P 500 declined 1.09%. This marked the VIX's largest one-day rise since June 5. The spike reflected concerns about AI stocks and geopolitical tensions, including reports of oil tankers catching fire near the Strait of Hormuz and escalating Russia-Ukraine developments.

Options traders are positioning for sustained elevated volatility through November. According to reports, traders purchased 9,200 November 18 calls at the 20 strike level for $1.7 million and 12,500 calls at the 23 strike level for $1.1 million, betting the VIX will close above 23 by mid-November.

Historical Pattern Suggests Reversal

Analysis of VIX data since January 1990 shows that when the index jumps 20% or more on a Friday, relief typically follows. In 32 instances of such Friday spikes, the VIX fell the next Monday 25 times and rose only seven times, with a typical Monday decline of 4.5%. One month later, the VIX was lower in 25 of the 32 cases, with a median decline of 16%.

Seasonal patterns also favor calmer conditions ahead. The VIX has declined in November in 25 of the last 36 years, with a median drop of 7.2%. From late October through year-end, the index has fallen in 22 of 36 years, with a median decline of 9.4%.

Bitcoin Signals Remain Calm

Bitcoin traded above $80,000 over the weekend with minimal movement, suggesting Friday's risk aversion may not persist. The bitcoin volatility index, or BVIV, slipped 1% on Friday to just under 40% and has remained relatively stable, indicating no acute market stress.

Bitcoin's weekend trading activity serves as a barometer for traditional market sentiment, as it is the only major macro asset that trades continuously. Market participants on the decentralized betting platform Polymarket assigned just a 9% probability to an AI bubble bursting by year-end, further suggesting limited panic among traders.

Caveats Remain

Historical trends offer no guarantee of future results. In seven of the 32 prior cases where the VIX spiked 20% or more on a Friday, the index continued climbing sharply on Monday, including episodes in August 2015, February 2018, and August 2024. The current VIX level below 20 leaves room for further upward movement if market conditions deteriorate on Monday.
