XRP Open Interest Recovers Despite Sustained Selling Pressure

XRP's derivatives market is showing signs of recovery after a sharp contraction in late August, though sustained selling pressure from traders continues to weigh on sentiment. Open interest—the total number of outstanding futures contracts—rebounded significantly over an eight-day period in early September, marking a shift from the deleveraging phase that characterized late August.

XRP's seven-day open-interest change moved from negative 27% on August 29 to positive 1% on September 6, according to analysis published on September 7. Binance open interest in XRP reached approximately $244 million during this period, while the token traded around $1.42.

However, the recovery in open interest masks continued selling activity across derivatives markets. Perpetual cumulative volume delta—a measure comparing market buy and sell volumes—fell to approximately negative $897.1 million, indicating that taker-initiated sell orders exceeded aggressive buying during the measured period. A declining cumulative volume delta signals that sellers have dominated market activity.

The combination of rising open interest and persistent selling pressure creates what analysts characterize as an unusual market structure. While increased derivatives exposure typically reflects growing trader participation, the accompanying selling data suggests that much of this new positioning reflects bearish expectations rather than bullish accumulation.

Spot Market Mirrors Derivatives Weakness

Selling pressure extended beyond perpetual futures into spot markets. Estimated spot cumulative volume delta across centralized exchanges fell to approximately negative $1.4 billion, the lowest level shown during the observed period. This indicates that market sell orders dominated aggregated spot trading activity even as XRP's price remained relatively stable.

The broader cryptocurrency derivatives environment showed heightened activity across smaller cryptocurrencies as well. Altcoin perpetual open interest surpassed bitcoin's on September 6 for the first time since December 2024, reflecting elevated participation beyond the XRP market alone.

Price Resilience Amid Mixed Signals

XRP's price stability contrasts with the bearish positioning evident in order-flow data. The token rebounded from a mid-August low near $1 and has remained resilient despite the sustained selling pressure. This divergence between price action and trader positioning represents a noteworthy market condition that analysts continue to monitor for signals of potential directional shifts.
