XRP recorded a significant price jump on August 19, rising 10.40% and outperforming Bitcoin’s 7.13% gain during a market-wide short squeeze. While the move marked XRP's largest daily increase since February 6, analysts and market indicators suggest reasons for caution regarding the sustainability of the rally.
Outperformance and Short Squeeze Dynamics
The wider market surge was largely fueled by a record $2.74 billion in short positions being force-closed across the cryptocurrency market within a 24-hour period. For XRP, the daily move outpaced what would have been expected based on its 180-day correlation with Bitcoin. Rather than merely following Bitcoin's 6.57% expected impact, XRP delivered a 3.83-point outperformance, placing the session in the top 3% of all XRP trading days since 2020.
Despite this outperformance, institutional interest showed a different trend. On the day of the rally, Bitcoin spot ETF inflows nearly tripled to $517 million, and Ethereum funds also saw sharp increases. Conversely, daily XRP ETF inflows dropped from $5.81 million to $2.35 million, indicating that institutional capital largely bypassed XRP during its surge.
Historical Precedents and Technical Outlook
Historical data following similar market events also points to potential headwinds. Since 2020, there have been 14 instances where Bitcoin gained at least 7% and XRP outperformed it. Historically, the median XRP return over the subsequent seven days in those scenarios was negative 3.84%, with only about a third of those episodes ending higher after a week.
On the charts, XRP remains contained within a falling channel that has capped its price since mid-May, with the recent 10% candle briefly touching the channel's upper boundary before failing to break through. Buying volume has faded since the spike, and futures open interest has decreased by 11.31% from its rally-day level. Analysts note that key levels to watch include the $0.98 base as a downside floor, while reclaiming the 100-day moving average near $1.15 would signal genuine trend repair.
