Zcash (ZEC) has reached its highest price since 2016, extending a significant rally that has pushed the privacy-focused cryptocurrency's market capitalization above $20 billion.
ZEC peaked at $1,249.28 before retreating to approximately $1,195 on Monday, according to CoinGecko data. Over the past week, the token gained about 45%, while gains over 30 days reached 138%.
The current price remains below Zcash's all-time high of $3,191.93, recorded on October 28, 2016, when only a limited token supply was in circulation.
ETF Launch Drives Rally
The surge in ZEC's value correlates with Grayscale's conversion of its Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund. The ETF, trading under the ticker ZCSH on NYSE ARCA, began trading on August 25 and provides investors with cryptocurrency exposure through traditional brokerage accounts.
The Grayscale Zcash ETF closed Friday at $83.77 per share, with $463.2 million in assets under management.
Privacy Features and Market Outlook
Zcash distinguishes itself through optional privacy features. The protocol allows users to choose between public and shielded transactions, with the latter employing zero-knowledge proofs to verify payments without revealing the sender, recipient, or transaction amount.
Zach Pandl, Grayscale's head of research, noted in an August 31 analysis that privacy features could become increasingly valuable for users prioritizing financial confidentiality. Pandl indicated that advancements in artificial intelligence could amplify demand for financial privacy by making it easier to link public blockchain transactions to user identities.
