Bitcoin is holding around $80,000 as it enters a pivotal week of US economic data releases that could shape its near-term trajectory ahead of the Federal Reserve's September 15-16 meeting.
Following a strong US jobs report and subsequent rise in rate-hike expectations, financial markets are bracing for inflation data that may determine whether risk-on assets like Bitcoin continue recovering or face further pressure.
The Week's Key Economic Events
Monday brings no trading activity as US financial markets close for Labor Day. Tuesday has no major scheduled events, and Wednesday's 10-Year US Note Auction is not expected to significantly impact cryptocurrency markets.
Thursday marks the first major test with the release of August Producer Price Index (PPI) data. Economists forecast headline PPI to rise 0.4% month-over-month, compared with no increase in July, while core PPI is expected at 0.3%. Annual producer inflation is projected to accelerate from 4.7% to 5.4%.
Friday brings the more significant August Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, estimated to show inflation holding at 3.3%-3.4% annually, with core CPI expected to ease from July's 2.5%. This data will likely have an immediate and substantial impact on Fed rate expectations.
Inflation's Impact on Bitcoin
Higher-than-expected inflation readings would strengthen the case for another Fed rate increase, potentially pressuring Bitcoin while pushing Treasury yields higher. Conversely, softer inflation data could ease rate-hike concerns.
Bitcoin already reacted sharply to hawkish messaging from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh in late August and the strong jobs report, dropping $2,000-$3,000 within hours. Despite mounting bearish sentiment and rate-hike odds exceeding 50%, Bitcoin has stabilized near $80,000 heading into this critical week of data.
