Bitcoin is up 7.33% for September, which would represent the strongest performance for the month since records began in 2013, narrowly ahead of September 2024's 7.29% return. The outcome depends on the final trading day, with Bitcoin near the threshold needed to secure the record.
A sustained gain would mark a significant shift in market dynamics. Bitcoin closed September in the red in eight of the 13 years between 2013 and 2025, including six consecutive losses from 2017 to 2022. A fourth straight green September would be the longest winning streak on record for the month, following gains of 3.91% in 2023, 7.29% in 2024, and 5.16% in 2025.
Despite recent strength, September's historical average return remains negative 2.34%, making it the worst-performing month across all data tracked. The pattern extends beyond cryptocurrency, as the S&P 500 has also averaged losses in September since 1945.
September's Turbulent Journey
Bitcoin opened the month around $78,500 after an August surge of 25%. Mid-month volatility emerged when the Senate's Clarity Act failed a cloture vote on September 15, triggering a $450.4 million outflow from spot Bitcoin ETFs—their worst day since June. The following day, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4%, its first increase since 2023. Bitcoin dipped to approximately $75,000 in response.
The decline reversed sharply after September 21. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded inflows of approximately $2.98 billion over seven consecutive sessions, including nearly $1 billion on the 21st, marking their strongest day since October 2025. Bitcoin rallied to $87,354, its highest level since late January, as short positions were liquidated.
Bitcoin has since retreated approximately 4% from that peak. On Monday, it declined to $83,000 as crude oil prices climbed above $100 per barrel.
Technical Outlook
On the daily chart, Fibonacci retracement levels identify support and resistance zones between $74,978 and $87,354. Trend indicators remain constructive: the Average Directional Index reads 42.3, well above the 25 threshold that confirms strong trends, while the Relative Strength Index sits at 61.2. The 50-day moving average trades above the 200-day moving average, a pattern known as a golden cross.
To close September with a record monthly gain, Bitcoin needs to finish above approximately $83,600. A break below $82,626 would put the next support zone at $81,166 to $79,705.
Broader Context
Despite a strong September, Bitcoin remains approximately 4.4% below its price at the start of 2026. Historical patterns suggest caution: September 2024's green performance was followed by a 3.69% decline in October and a 23% drop in the fourth quarter. The Federal Reserve has scheduled meetings for October 27–28 and December 8–9.
