Bitcoin Short Liquidations Hit $2.74 Billion as Price Surges Past $69,000

Bitcoin recently surged past the $69,000 threshold, returning to price levels last observed during its 2021 peak. The sharp market move forced a massive wave of short positions out of the market, resulting in $2.74 billion in short liquidations over a 24-hour period.

Overall, the broader cryptocurrency market recorded nearly $2.99 billion in total liquidations. Bitcoin led the wave with approximately $1.42 billion in liquidations, while Ethereum followed closely with $1.13 billion. Short traders bore the brunt of the volatility, accounting for $2.74 billion of the total compared to roughly $255.09 million in long liquidations.

Individual high-risk traders were also significantly impacted by the market shift. Blockchain tracker Lookonchain reported that a trader identified as pension-usdt.eth experienced the liquidation of an entire 50,000 ETH short position valued at about $106 million. The account reportedly suffered a $23.9 million loss after previously accumulating a 23-win streak and making about $49 million.

According to K33 Research, the scale of the recent short liquidation surpassed previous historical records. Vetle Lunde, head of research at K33 Research, noted that it was the first time Bitcoin recorded more than $1 billion in short liquidations in a single day, exceeding prior single-day peaks of $757 million in May 2021 and $694 million in November 2025. This volatility follows an earlier market crash on October 10, 2025, when Bitcoin fell from above $126,000 and triggered approximately $19 billion in total liquidations in a single day.

Crypto analyst commentary indicates that Bitcoin bounced strongly from the $63,000 support level, successfully reclaiming key technical levels at $64,000, $65,700, and $67,200 to establish new support zones. After testing resistance near the $70,500 area and pulling back to consolidate, Bitcoin traded near $69,322. Market observers note that potential future price direction will depend on whether buyers can break and hold above the $70,500 resistance, with $67,200 identified as a key support level to watch.
